Hello all,
This is my first post on this website, although I have
been following

the various threads for

some time.
For a couple of weeks now, the quality of discussion
has improved

significantly from the usual

Thamil/Sinhala bashing to (somewhat) structured
arguements, and hence I

thought I'd chip in my

two cents worth from time to time.
This thread started by Danny is particularly
interesting because he

raises a very valid point

about the Maharajas. Before anybody flames me about
Thamil /Sinhalese

biases, I should like to

point out that that I have no interntion to bring
races/religion into

this discussion - whether

it be a Maharajah, a Sumathipala, a Ratwatte, a
Bandaranayake...I don't

care!
I'll just share with you some information on the
Maharajas that you

would not come across in the

public print. Anandan Arumugam is absolutely correct
when he mentions

that one of the Maharajas

was in fact personal assistant to CBK. Not long after
CBK came to

power, this Maharajah lady

enterred into her trust very quickly by being a 'good
friend'. She was

the one responsible for

ensuring CBK was 'presentable', doing her make-overs,
chosing her saris

and make up, and above

all, being her confidante on personal matters. CBK had
huge trust in

her, and many people close

to her realised that the sophisticated Maharajah lady
was up to no

good. I believe she used CBK

to fill up the Maharajah coffers, and it took some
time for CBK to

realise what exactly was going

on - but once it did, the sophisticated Maharajah lady
was given the

boot! Even now, we don't

hear very much about the Maharajahs. But I can assure
you, about 5

years ago, everywhere you went

in Colombo the Maharajah emipire was the talk of the
town. Now, not a

whisper - like that have

dissapeared into thin air. A wish to keep a low
profile? I think so!

I personally have very different opinions regarding
the Maharaja group.

Danny you need to back up

your claims with better evidence. You cannot just tell
me that

maharaja's are robbers and expect

me to believe it. Those are just words. As for Tcups
claim of

Maharaja's wife stealing from

coffers, i don't know about this. But even if it is
true, that would be

a fault with that

particular individual lady and should not be
attributed to the

organization as a whole.
I personally think the maharaja group has done a lot
for the country.

Their news coverage is the

most professional and unbiased in sri lanka. They own
several tv

stations and radio stations,

setting an example as good bussiness people. They
pioneered much of

what we take for granted

today in sri lanka.
It is obvious that the maharajas are hated by
chandrika since they are

strong UNP supporters. THe

UNP and maharajas have worked hand in hand in
enhancing the economy and

introducing new projects.

However, CBK would probably bring her personal issues
into this and use

petty lies to convince

people that the maharajas are the biggest robbers and
such.
And by the way, i think my information is credible
since i have many

contacts who work at a high

level with the maharaja group.

I do understand your frustration and it seems to be
like this for

everyone. We cannot blame one

party or one particular group for this. Corruption is
in our blood we

cannot say no for it. We

all know very well and we used it for our favour. (If
you are living in

Srilanka) Be honest with

last? Speeding OR

jumping queue OR any

Whether you like it or not this corruption business is

that easy to demolish it

either. You say it terrorism, corruption, drugs,
protholes, child

abuses, slavery name any thing

we can deliver from srilanka so what is the point of
talking about

Maharaja and others. At least

they are using the system to get rich and wealth. Same
time they are

providing employment for

thousands. Whose fault is that? Some one is getting it
so they are

providing it. It is easy as it

is. I know you all are not serious.

Estate Tamils are the back bone for our economy. They
are honest, hard

working and harmless

people even on this corrupted paradise... (Not the
politicians and

business people)

Some one has to come out, and name, and shame this
corrupted people.

out all of their

Srilanka if you are a

wealthy man/woman you can do whatever you like to do.

I am very surprised that the Sunday Leader, renowned
for it's practices

of unearthing unsavoury

details on politicians, business people, and their
corrupt deals, has

not picked up (in their

usual detail) on this Maharajah organisation. (Having
said that, their

style of reporting,

although extremely informative, in usually in bad
taste - maybe not

many would agree with me on

this point).
I did a quick search on Google and found some evidence
on the Maharaja

lady and her huge

influence on the President, but not very much about
what became of her

after she was kicked out

CBK's 'favourite list'.

But I suppose all this is politics...CBK has been
helped financially by

the Maharajah in return

for special favours - this happens all the time, not
only in SL. But

the whole CBK / Maharajah

relationship fell apart due to, in my opinion, one
thing. Once the

public started getting wind of

the fact that the Maharajas were making full use of
the President to

further their business

opportunities, CBK could no longer afford to lose face
with her voters.

It was becoming quite

apparent that CBK was favouring the Maharajah
organisation over other

aspirants on business

deals, and before the kettle got too hot, decided it
was time to sever

all ties with them. Just

I have not heard of the lady being arrested and then
pardoned (after

but then again, I have not seen very much at all

The thing is, they have been keeping a very low
profile over the last

couple of years, and it does not help that since they
were in the

limelight back in the mid-nineties, I have been living
abroad and thus

SYDNEY, Australia (AP) -- Hundreds of police have fanned out across southern Sydney to prevent more race-based rioting.

Phone messages have been blamed for fomenting race riots that erupted in southern Sydney on Sunday and spilled into Monday.

Police have reported copycat messages being sent in cities around Australia, sparking
fears the violence could spread.

By late Wednesday there were no reports of new violence, as police set up roadside
checks to try stopping troublemakers from driving to suburbs hit earlier by rioting.

Nearly 40 people have been injured and 27 arrested in the subsequent rioting.

One man has already been jailed, New South Wales state leader Morris Iemma said
Wednesday. The man, whom Iemma did not identify, was sentenced Tuesday to four months for carrying an offensive weapon -- a tree branch -- in a public place.

Iemma said police would keep a close watch on places of worship in the coming days.

"Special attention will be paid to places of worship, our churches and our schools, he said. "These hooligans and criminals will not destroy the fabric of our society."

The state's Police Minister Carl Scully said more text messages inciting violence were circulating in Sydney and other Australian cities.

"We need to be aware that there is a risk of incidents continuing," he said. "On the
weekend, there will be a huge police presence across Sydney ... and there will be a large police presence over the next few nights."

Brad Whittaker, who described himself as a representative of the beach culture
community in Cronulla, said the violence must end.

"The day began as a show of solidarity against behavior of ethnic gangs that have been harassing the public on our beaches over a period of seven years," Whittaker said of Sunday's riot.

"It escalated out of control under the influence of right-wing racists from outside this community, and alcohol."
